Thank You, Kim!

After more than 24 years we say Au Revoir to our administrative assistant. Kim Cook has answered the church phone, kept the church calendar, managed the church facility, taken care of payroll for the church staff, washed the church dishes (and dish towels), created the church newsletters, designed the church bulletins, and a whole plethora of other activities here at Allisonville for nearly a quarter century. She has earned a well-deserved retirement from the spot behind that desk.

The Good News? Kim plans to continue as our Accounts Payable/Payroll Bookkeeper. She plans to continue to sing in the choir. She plans to continue to be involved in the church that she loves. So we will see her around! –Deb

Pastor’s Ponderings: Tell It!

I had a great time at my first-full-time General Assembly. The atmosphere is very different from my many experiences at the General Synod of United Church of Christ. GS is primarily a business meeting with some educational opportunities and a sense of family reunion. The GA is family reunion with growth opportunities and business.

2011 General AssemblyThe theme was Tell It!, and there were many ways in which the story of the church and its ministry was shared. Stories about programs, individual faith journeys, opportunities for ministry, and stories that point us toward the future.

I found it very helpful to see embodied the vision of the Disciples of Christ which is a Movement of Wholeness in a Fractured World. In worship, in presentations, in reports, in plenary, in growth experiences, the vision was evident.

Opening worship was great. Rev. Holly McKissick gave an inspirational sermon and our Praise Band was just awesome, both in video form and live in Nashville.

In her pre-election speech, Sharon Watkins spoke of the next biennium and how we must, as a church, continue our conversations about racism and same-gender orientation. She also spoke of a church that is in transformation…transformation that will enable our congregation to better serve in this post-modern world.

The transformation of the denomination includes more than 700 new and alive churches in the last 10 years and some 500 transitioning/transforming/renewing churches. The vision of Dick Hamm in 2000 was 1000 new churches and 1000 renewed churches by 2020. That is attainable.

Shalom,
Pastor Dennis
